On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Deerwood Academy Robotics Club entered three teams in the WeDo Storytelling Competition hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing.
Our scholars competed against nine teams from six Atlanta Public Schools. Not only were students tasked with creating an innovative story using LEGO WeDo programmable robots as characters; but also have the challenge of presenting their story to Georgia Tech staff and partners, Career Builders, parents, and teachers. Our scholars were eager and up for the challenge!
Student teams were judged on creativity, entertainment value, the number of WeDo characters used, the integration of WeDo characters and Programming in their story, relevance of props and scenery, and how WeDo characters interact with non-WeDo characters. But here is the bonus, the students had the opportunity to incorporate two WeDo characters that move without a given computer code!
This was a challenge that our scholars were happy to accept!
With over 50 Atlanta Public School students from six schools, this competition rapidly turned into a victorious moment for our Deerwood Scholars as Deerwood “Roar & Peace”, led by Ms. Henderson, placed third, and Deerwood PBIS and No Place for Hate inspired “iCARE”, led by Ms. Spears, placed first!
The Deerwood scholars that placed first with the story “iCARE” includes:
