Greetings Parents and Students:         


I am honored and humbled to serve as the Principal of the Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School. I am looking forward to working hand in hand with students, parents, and community advocates to ensure that each of our students has the opportunity to maximize their high school experience. I remain energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of our students.

This year the D.M. Therrell campus will transition from three independent schools to one traditional high school. This is an exciting time for our faculty and staff.

Our work at D.M. Therrell High School will be guided by the belief that all children can reach high levels of achievement if we engage them in a student-centered environment by focusing on their individual strengths, providing them with comprehensive academic and social support, and immersing them in a culture of compassion and achievement. Our mission is to create a student-centered environment for students: an environment that will challenge them to maintain high levels of motivation and achievement through discipline, structure, respect, perseverance, scholarship, and excellence. We know that each child is different and deserves success. We believe that every learner is unique and we will strive to accommodate and inspire the special interests, talents, and strengths in each of our students
through the delivery of an innovative, differentiated, and rigorous educational program.

It is my hope that all students get involved in our school through athletics, music, drama, student leadership, community volunteerism and other school activities. Working together, we can ensure that the students of D.M. Therrell continue to achieve their highest potential in the classroom, gym, on stage or on the field. Your involvement, partnership and support are greatly appreciated during the school year as we work to build and maintain strong academic and support programs.

While academic achievement remains our top priority, we also believe it is vitally important that our students are able to grow socially by having positive interactions with peers and adults. Students at D.M. Therrell High School will be encouraged to embrace honesty, integrity, hard work, respect for all and community service as keys to success. In addition to the student-centered academic environment that we will provide, students will also be engaged in a character development and community service focus to foster personal responsibility and growth.

Education is a partnership between the school, students, parents and the community. The Open House schedule for all APS high schools is on Friday, August 1, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Please come and meet with our teachers and staff. All students are more successful when we work together as a team to achieve educational goals. I am confident that this will be an outstanding school year and look forward to partnering with you to continue the Daniel McLaughlin Therrell tradition of academic excellence!

    Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

    As you have seen on local, national and international news this week, health authorities around the world are working to control an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in several countries in West Africa. 

    While there is no outbreak reported in Georgia, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) understands that many parents may have questions about the precautions being taken by the district as it relates to this virus. The APS Health Services Office is collaborating with the local counties boards of Health, Georgia Department of Public Health, the Georgia Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education to ensure that we are taking the appropriate actions regarding this issue.  They all work in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

    APS has an established protocol for identifying and reporting communicable diseases in our schools.  We will continue to follow this protocol, as well as the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Ebola Guidance for Schools.

    The Department of Public Health has advised all school districts in Georgia to be aware of students and their families who have traveled to Ebola-affected areas within the previous 21 days.

    We encourage all of our parents, staff, teachers and families to continue good general health prevention and hygiene practices and to monitor the well-being of themselves and their children.  If you, your child or any member of your family experiences any of the known signs and symptoms of Ebola or any communicable disease, immediately contact your personal physician or closest health facility.  Parents with a concern about exposure or any questions should also contact our nursing services managers for Atlanta Public Schools.

     Cluster
     
    Building Stronger Clusters: One Idea at a Time
     
    Atlanta Public Schools is beginning the planning process to define the future direction for each school cluster within the district.  Our goal is to build stronger schools and clusters to ensure high quality academics and focused programming across the district.

    The planning process will include targeted and prioritized action steps needed to implement each cluster plan.  The cluster plan will guide the academic direction for students within each cluster.  The cluster plans will inform the FY16 Budget and, to the extent possible, the School System Operating Models and Flexibility Options.

    We are asking community members, parents and APS employees to take the survey below and share your opinion about the approaches that should be included in the cluster plan for our school communities.  The survey closes Friday, October 17. 2014.

  • APS Winter Card Contest for Students  
     
    Superintendent Meria J. Carstarphen invites students to design the official Atlanta Public Schools Winter Card

    WHO:
    All students

    CREATE:
    Your design on any media that will show well when reproduced (painting, drawing, cut paper, marker, etc.)

    SUBMIT:
    Your entry to APS Fine Arts Office c/o Jessica Booth by the end of school day November 7, 2014
    Place your entry in an envelope and label it “Superintendent Winter Card”.

    ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
    • Design theme should reflect winter in the school district, Atlanta, Georgia, holidays, etc. All ideas are welcome; however, only nonreligious themes and languages will be considered in order to be inclusive of our diverse student body.
    • Printed card size is 3”x 5”. Submit designs in any one of the following sizes: 5”x 7”, 7”x 9”,9”x 11”, 11”x 13”, 13”x 15”, etc. Larger sized artwork allows more details to be added.
    • Include the following information on the back of your design submission:

      Grade
      Teacher’s name

  • Infinite Campus Parent and Student Portal

    CPP Login Page:  https://ic.apsk12.org/portal

    Parents of students in grades K–12 have access to class schedules, attendance records and grades by Campus Portal for Parents (CPP) which is an easy-to-use, secure communications tool. Additionally, CPP enables parents to verify household information, including their email address, home address and telephone numbers.
    Contact your child’s school to get your CPP activation key. Parents are required to  request the CPP activation key in person. To ensure that all student information remains secure, parents must provide a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID card, or passport) before receiving the CPP activation key.  Once parents receive the activation key, they can visit https://ic.apsk12.org/portal to create a unique username and password.

  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students who are 18 years of age or older ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student's education records.  These rights include the right to provide written consent before the school discloses personally identifiable information (PII) from the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without con­sent.

    One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests.  A school official is a person employed by the school as an ad­ministrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel) or a person serving on the school board.  A school official also may include a volunteer or contractor outside of the school who performs an institutional service of function for which the school would otherwise use its own employees and who is under the direct control of the school with respect to the use and maintenance of PII from education records, such as an attorney, audi­tor, medical consultant, or therapist; a parent or student volunteering to serve on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee; or a parent, student, or other volunteer assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks.  A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educa­tion record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

    Also, upon request, the school discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll, or is already enrolled if the disclosure is for purposes of the student’s enrollment or transfer.
