                        Georgia Mathematics 1 Coach Book (Triumph Learning)

                       

Each student will receive a COACH workbook which we will use for the entire year. This workbook provides informational text as well as practice problems for each topic we will cover in the course. This workbook is an invaluable resource for the students, and they will be held responsible for keeping their book and transporting it between home and school. Math Support and homework will be assigned from this workbook, and therefore students must have their COACH book with them in order to receive credit for being prepared and credit for their homework.

 

Description:   Welcome to the 3rd year of Math 1 in Georgia Public High Schools.  I am excited to embark on this new journey with you as we continue to explore mathematics in a profoundly different way.  In this course you will continue to explore math from an integrated perspective of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Data Analysis, and Probability.  In this class you are expected to make connections and to think critically.  You will be active problem solvers, usually arriving at solutions collaboratively.  You are invited, encouraged, and expected to take control and responsibility for your active learning.  Your experiences in Math 1 will serve as the first steps of preparing you to be capable of entering college at the Calculus level or beyond.

  • Determine the number of outcomes related to an event.

  • Explore variability of data by determining the mean absolute deviation.

Algebra in Context      

  • Continue to explore and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebra.
  • Solve simple equations.

Coordinate Geometry              

  • Investigate properties of geometric figures in the coordinate plane.

Methods of Learning: You will engage in a variety of instructional methods in order to achieve your learning goals.  We will rely primarily on the Georgia Framework performance tasks for Math 1.  Completing these activities will require the use of collaboration, investigation, discovery, and writing.  In addition, we will utilize lecture (limited), board work, mini-white boards, peer tutoring, demonstrations, drills, computer labs, homework, and guided practice.  Additional resources may include Core-Plus Mathematics: Course 1,         Core-Plus Mathematics: Course 3, Math I Coach Book, and College Board Springboard model instructional units, Carnegie Learning Georgia Mathematics 1, and Passing the Georgia Mathematics I EOCT Test.

 

Student Expectations:

In order to better reach the objectives of this class you will be expected to adhere to several criteria.

Ø  You should think critically.

Ø  You should work collaboratively.

Ø  You should strive to be problem solvers.

Ø  You should participate in class discussions.

Ø  You will ask questions and lead class discussions.

Ø  You should follow all classroom rules and procedures.

Ø  You should bring all necessary materials to class.  This includes the following:

o   Three-ring Notebook binder, pencils, notebook paper, graph paper, calculator, planner

Additionally, in order to better reach the objectives of this class you can expect me to adhere to several criteria.

Ø  I will help you to arrive at the answer instead of giving you the answer.

Ø  I will lecture only when absolutely necessary.

 

Success in Class:

The objective in this class is NOT to get good grades.  The objective in this class is to engage in journey of cognitive growth.  Good grades are evidence of a journey, not the driving goal.  By prioritizing your drive towards cognitive growth your grades will reflect this accordingly.  By consistently meeting your student expectations, while I consistently meet my teacher expectations, the likelihood of achieving this cognitive growth, and therefore good academic grades, is greatly increased.

 

In order to achieve this cognitive growth, a variety of assignments will be used.  The grading scale is as follows:

You can best achieve success in cognitive growth by balancing these types of work, instead of trying to focus solely on one or two of the categories.

 

In addition to a shift in your perspective to grades, you may need to shift your perspective towards assessments which you are most familiar with in the form of tests and quizzes.  Assessments are meant to be an integrated part of instruction not an ending point.  Through a variety of assessments you will not only be able to demonstrate your mastery of concepts but also show where additional instruction is needed.  The forms of assessments will be balanced among the following:

Materials:  Each student is required to have a 1½ or 2 inch three-ring notebook with graph paper, filler paper, TI – 30X calculator, Early College planner, mathematics dictionary, and pencils.  The notebook must be arranged in the following order with dividers:

a.       Course Syllabus and Classroom Management Guidelines  (rules and expectations)

b.      Day Pages with completed Focus Assignments arranged according to dates

c.       Performance tasks, handouts arranged according to dates

 

Notebooks will be checked randomly during the semester.  Students will bring their notebook and Math Coach book  to class daily.

 

Additional Help: While you are regularly expected to arrive at solutions and understandings on your own and collaboratively, this does not mean that I am not available to you to help facilitate your learning.  Class time offers only a limited amount of time for individual assistance.  In addition, it is quite normal for some to need additional time and work to master the standards in class.  In recognition of these facts, I will be available after school for tutorial on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:20 – 4:30 for tutorial.  Other strategies used for intervention and/or enrichment will include peer tutors, peer mentors, working lunch, alternative assignments/assessments, reassessments, and parent-teacher conferences.  Parent-teachers are by appointment after school.  Students will be assigned mandatory tutorial each for non mastery of standards.  Names of mandatory students will be posted on the door on a weekly basis.

In addition, students will be given printed progress reports every Monday, which states their current grade. Students are expected to bring this home to their parent/guardian when it is received.  Parents can also view student’s grades via Infinite campus parent portal.

 

Plagiarism:

 

Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work. Plagiarism by students is a very serious offense that will result in punishments such as a failing grade on an assignment or for the course. For further information please refer to the student code of conduct printed in the student agenda book.

 

Cheating

 

Copying or photocopying another student’s work, cutting and pasting work from the Internet and submitting it as your own, copying another student’s answers during a quiz or test is not allowed. If I find evidence of this or other forms of cheating, all parties involved (including the one generating the work) will be deemed to have cheated and the appropriate sanctions for cheating will apply.  Anyone found cheating on assignments, either in-class or homework, will receive a grade of "0" for the assignment, and the appropriate authorities will be informed.  You will not be permitted to makeup work that you initially cheated on.  The following Atlanta Board of Education Policy will be followed to the letter of the law: Academic Integrity - Board Policy Code: JCDAG.  The entire policy can be found in your APS Student Handbook.
